Medical Disorder

The term medical disorder refers to functional disturbance or abnormality without structural changes.

Examples of physical disorders: lactose intolerance, irritable bowel syndrome, fibromyalgia, diabetes mellitus type 2, hyperaldosteronism, phenylketonuria.

Examples of psychological disorders: anorexia nervosa, bipolar disorder, depersonalization disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder.

A disorder, for example, diabetes mellitus type 2, may or may not have a known cause and may or may not be associated with symptoms and signs.

Opposite to a disorder, a disease is an abnormality in both function and structure.
