Sphenopalatine Artery

Sphenopalatine Artery: This is also known as the nasopalatine artery and is located in the head. It is also usually known as the “artery of epistaxis” meaning the artery that nose bleeds come from.

This artery is a division of the “maxillary artery” that passes thru the “sphenopalatine foramen” into the nasal cavity, at the back portion of the “superior meatus”. It is at this point it becomes the “posterior lateral” nasal branches.

Passing under the exterior of the spenoid, the artery finishes at the septum of the nasal passage as the divisions of the “posterior septal branches”. This is where it will reconnect with the branches of the greater palatine artery.

This artery often is ligated surgically in order to control severe epistaxis or nose bleeding.
