Paraoxonase

Paraoxonase is an essential enzyme which helps protect people from the harmful effects of pesticides owing to the fact that this enzyme contains organophosphate substrates. This enzyme primarily belongs to the A-oxonzse family which aid in breaking down acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. This is one of the crucial functions of paraoxonase because when acetylcholinesterase inhibitors are not broken down these would eventually bind to the cholinesterases which are responsible for pesticide poisoning. Paraoxonase is considered an important enzyme owing to the fact that about 220,000 people die annually due to pesticide exposure. Levels of oxonases in the body vary from one individual to another. When the body produces less of this enzyme, the person is at high risk for pesticide and other forms of poisoning.
