Gustatory Rhinitis
Gustatory Rhinitis: Rhinitis is a condition that is common and which is described as a nose that is runny. The interior regions of the nose get irritated and inflamed, developing symptoms, like, runny nose, post nasal drip and congestion nasally. This is due to mucous membrane of the nose becoming inflamed which in turn produces large quantity of mucus. It is this excessive amount of mucus that causes the already revealed symptoms. “Gustatory rhinitis” may be caused for a variety of reasons, like, reaction to irritants or a bacterial or viral infection. Normally, it affects the lining of the nasal passages but also affects the eyes, throat and ears. This condition may also cause earaches, headaches, sleeping problems, poor concentration, snoring etc.
This condition is categorized into 3 types – non-allergic, infective and allergic rhinitis. Rhinitis that is infective is due to viral or bacterial infections, where allergic rhinitis happens as reactions to allergens. Rhinitis that is non-allergic if divided further into different kinds as by the cause includes vasomotor, autonomic, drug-induced, gustatory rhinitis, atrophic, and “rhinitis medicamentosa”. “Gustatory rhinitis” is a kind of rhinitis non-allergic that is linked to alcohol or food consumption. But, it can’t be seen as one of the many food allergies, as food allergies are eliminated by tests before a diagnosis of “gustatory rhinitis” is even made. It happens after eating certain foods, particularly spicy and hot ones. According to several studies, both adults and children might change this condition, especially those who have allergic rhinitis and those who smoke excessively.
